Black scrollwork vine on a calf
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a single black vine with curling tendrils and small swirls, running vertically up the outer lower leg. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the design tapers toward the top and bottom. The plain pale background and soft lighting keep the focus on the tattoo.

Dear Tomas, the ivy has got into the chapel at last, and I have stopped pulling it out. Your mother would have laughed at me. I spent three mornings on the north wall with shears and a bucket, and by the third the stems had already found the sill again, looping through the broken lancet as if they had been measuring it for years.

What I did not tell you in the last letter is about the iron gate. When the steward's men took the bolts out in March, they left the old scrollwork hanging from one hinge, a single spray of it, curling down towards the mud. Mr Pryce says it is only rust and I should let the gardeners cart it off. But I sat with it for an hour on Tuesday and I swear the curls were tighter at the bottom than the top, as though the vine had been trying to climb back up out of the ground.
So I have taken to cutting a little each evening and carrying the cuttings to the old well house, where the stone is cool. I have planted eleven of them in a row. Four have taken. The others are sulking, which Mr Pryce says is what new roots do in a wet spring. I am not sure he is right, but I have stopped arguing with him about it.
Come at midsummer if the coach fares allow. Bring the good spade. The gate can wait for you; I think it has been waiting for someone to take it seriously. Yours, Hester.
