Polynesian tribal and flower chest tattoo
Blackwork · Chest · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a small flower with reddish petals at the top, joined to a curved band of bold black tribal patterns that sweeps down and across the upper chest towards the shoulder. The solid black areas contrast with fine linework and swirled details, while the flower has soft pink and red shading. The photograph is taken at an angle with warm lighting, and the subject's face is not visible.

The outrigger had been drying on the reef side of Tafua for three days when Mere finally sent her nephew down to fetch me. I was the only one left who could still cut the old pattern into a paddle without measuring, and the boy had been told to say nothing about the lamp oil he'd spilled on my good mat. I went anyway, because the sea had been rough all week and nobody else could read the tides well enough to get the nets in.

The harbour was quiet except for the gulls fighting over a crate of bruised mangoes. Mere sat on the upturned hull with a cup of tea going cold beside her. She didn't look up. She said her sister's husband had been carving a band of black waves along the bow, the kind that curl back on themselves like a wave hesitating before it breaks, and that he had stopped halfway through and walked into the hills. Would I finish it. I asked what the flower was for, the little red one she had pinned to the bow in wet paint. She said it was for the sister, who had planted the frangipani by the boathouse the year the storm took the old wall.
I worked through the afternoon with the tide going out beneath us. By dusk the black bands ran the length of the hull and turned at the stern into a long spiral, and the petals, when I finally lifted the brush, had the faint rose of morning. Mere nodded once. Then she tucked the flower paint into her apron and said the boat would sail on the next moon, with or without the husband, and that I should stop being so careful with my hands.
