Tribal-style tattoo on the side of the ribs

Blackwork · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black tribal design of two curved, blade-like shapes with a spiral and a row of chevron patterns runs diagonally across the side of the ribs. The linework is bold and solid, with dense black fills and a few fine interior details. The image is a warm-toned close crop of bare skin with a plain background, showing only the torso and part of the hair at the edge.

The oar had split along the grain the night before the regatta, and Hettie Coyle would not hear of replacing it with ash from the timber yard. She sat on an upturned crate in the boatshed with the broken blade across her knees and a rasp in her fist, while the harbour outside rang with halyards and gulls.

Her grandfather had carved the old pattern into every paddle the family owned: two long curved blades, a spiral at the throat where the wood turned like a wave lifting, and along the edges a run of chevrons to show the water which way to go. He never wrote any of it down. He told her once that a stroke with the spiral on the blade pulled the boat round a corner before you had thought of turning, and she laughed at him, then tried it on the Tern and found he was right.

She worked until the lamps along the quay were lit. The splinters went into the stove. The spiral she cut slowly, keeping her thumb flat on the grain, and when the chevrons came out sharp she sat back and saw the blade was wider than the one it replaced, and heavier, and it sat in her hands as if it had always meant to be there.

At dawn the Tern went out with the others, and the spiral dipped and bit and held. Coming round the breakwater, Hettie watched the rival crews fall back behind the bend one by one, as if something had caught hold of their keels. Her grandfather's paddle stayed on its hook in the shed, marked with the old chevrons, and she left it there for the next girl who came in with a split.
