Polynesian tribal calf tattoo in black ink

Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo covers the calf from below the knee towards the ankle, shown in three side-by-side views of the same leg. It is built from bold black tribal shapes, including spirals, curved bands and a central face with angular eyes and a toothed mouth. The solid black ink sits against lighter skin, with a plain background of a room and furniture behind.

Tane, the mask is finished, though Mama says you will laugh at the teeth. I carved them the way Uncle Hoani taught us, one tooth at a time, until the wood stopped arguing with the gouge. It sits now on the wall above the stove, where the spirals catch the lamp and seem to turn slowly, the way the reef water does when the tide is going out.

You asked why I would not sell it to the man from the hotel in Papeete. He offered twice what the boat cost. But the face was cut for the gate of the lagoon, to watch the water and frighten off whatever comes in at night wanting more than fish. Uncle Hoani said a mask that has been sold forgets whose gate it guards. I did not believe him until the storm in March, when the outer reef went white and the fishing boats came home one by one with their lamps lit.

The old men gathered at my door that night to see whether the face would hold. It did. The rain came sideways and the mask's narrow eyes stayed sure. In the morning every boat was tied up, and Matai's nets were only torn, not lost. I have not told anyone that I sanded the spirals three times, each time with my palm flat on the grain, asking the wood to keep its grip.

Come home at the turn of the year. Bring the blue cloth Aunt wanted, and bring yourself, not money. The mask will know you by your walk, I think, and so will I.
