Biomechanical leg sleeve on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
The photograph shows a full biomechanical design across the lower leg, shown from three angles side by side. Organic, horn-like and feather-like forms with ribbed, fleshy textures run from the back of the calf round to the shin. The shading is smooth and sculpted, with highlights and deep shadows, in orange, tan, grey and teal ink against a dark background.

Mrs Dorrie Hask had let the back bedroom to the same lodger for nine winters, and in all that time she had never once seen him asleep. His lamp burned under the door until the gulls started up over the harbour, and every morning the landing carpet was dusted with curled shavings of horn, pale as peeled almonds, which he swept into a biscuit tin without a word.

He called himself a carver, though the only things he carved were what the tide gave up. Cuttlebone, ram's horn, the wing cases of beetles, a gull's skull bleached on the shingle at Saltwick. He worked by the window with the sea going from slate to a dark bruised teal, and when Dorrie brought up his tea he never looked round, only said, "Not yet, Mrs Hask. It doesn't like to be rushed."
She found the drawings the week after the big spring tide. They lay under the tin in a sheaf of brown paper: a limb built from ribs and feathers, horn curling up from the ankle like the prow of a ship, and at the bottom of each sheet the same line in his cramped hand. It will be finished when the water comes up the steps and does not go back.
That night the sea rose higher than she had ever known it. In the morning the back step was wet, and a single horn lay there, curved and ribbed, still warm to the touch. Dorrie carried it upstairs and knocked, but the door was open and the room was empty, the lamp cold, the tin gone. She hung the horn on the hook beside the spare room key, where it still catches the light in the afternoons.
