Popcorn bucket and speech bubble on an arm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A striped popcorn bucket labelled CORN sits at the centre, with popcorn pieces spilling over the rim and scattered above it, and a speech bubble reading POP to the right. Bold black outlines define the bucket and bubble, while stippled dots shade the bucket stripes and popcorn. The design is shown in black ink on a forearm against a plain light background.

The popper in the foyer of the Regal had been coughing since Tuesday, and by the Saturday matinee Malcolm had given up on it altogether. He stood behind the sweet counter with a scoop in one hand and a striped paper bucket in the other, dropping kernels into the hot oil by hand while the queue for *The Lighthouse Keeper's Daughter* bent round the posters and out past the doors into the rain.

Ruth, who did the tickets, leaned over the counter. 'Nobody's here for the corn, Malcolm.'
'They're here for the corn.'
'They're here for the noise.'
He struck the side of the machine with the flat of his hand. It gave one dry knock, then a second, then the whole lot went at once, POP, POP, POP, kernels hammering the glass and spilling over the rim of the bucket and across the carpet like confetti. A boy in the front row shouted. A woman laughed until she had to sit down. Somebody at the back began to clap.
Afterwards, with the house lights up and the foyer a drift of white, Malcolm found one kernel stuck to the underside of the counter, shiny and perfectly round. He pressed it onto the lid of the bucket and it held. On Monday he cut a speech bubble from card, wrote POP across it in fat biro, and pinned it above the popper. Ruth never asked him to take it down, and the machine didn't cough again until the spring.
