Diary, 3.40 a.m., Ward 9. Nothing on the monitors since midnight but the drip of the saline bag and the odd cough from bay two. I have been standing at the window with a cold tea because the car park lamps make the sky look ashamed of itself, and I keep thinking about what Ruth said on Tuesday, that the moon was going to pass in front of the other one tonight and we would never see a thing from here.

She was right about the cloud. But at half two Mr Okafor in side room four asked me to lift the blind so he could see whatever was out there. There was a thin white ring around the moon, pale as a wet thumbprint, and beside it, low over the bins, a second faint curve that had no business being there. Two circles, just touching, and between them the sky looked as if someone had drawn on it with a very fine pen.

I told him it was Venus, which I am fairly sure it wasn't. He laughed until he needed the oxygen mask back on. He said his father had taught him that you sight along the place where two rings cross, the way you would sight an arrow, and that the feathers keep it true. I did not ask him what his father had been aiming at in 1974.

Ruth's handover note is on the desk. Under the observations she has written, in capitals, CHECK THE SKY. I have drawn a line through it and written underneath: sky checked, fine. Mr Okafor is asleep with the blind still up. I think I will leave it that way until the lights come on.
