Isometric island with palm trees on a forearm
Dotwork · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A stepped, isometric block rises to a small cluster of palm trees on its top, tapering to a point at the base. The outlines are crisp and the faces are shaded with stippled dots on the lower right and a wavy, wood-grain pattern on the left. The design is in black ink only and sits centred on the inner forearm against a plain, pale background.

Dear Hal, the island is exactly where the chart put it, which is the first thing I shall never forgive the chart for. We raised it at slack water, a stepped block of rock standing clear of the swell, its sides cut into terraces so square they could only have been made by someone with a ruler and no patience for weather. The palms along the top all lean one way, as though they were told which way the wind would come.

Ruth wanted to sound the shelf first. The lead line went past forty fathoms on the north face and found nothing, and on the south face it found the same ledge again, stepping inward, repeated like a word a child writes over and over. We ate biscuit in the boat and argued whether the thing was a mountain standing on its point or a hole with an island poured into it.
On the third morning the tide dropped further than the tables promised and the lower face came up dark and speckled, grained like wet timber where the sea had worked it. Across the stippled underside someone had left a row of small pale dots that I took at first for barnacles. They were tally marks. I counted eleven hundred and four, each one a day somebody had stood on the top and watched the boats not come.
I have drawn it in pencil, every terrace and every palm, and I am sending the sketch rather than the coordinates because I no longer trust the coordinates to hold. When the tide turned I went to draw the last tree from memory and found I had given it the same lean as the rest. I have decided not to correct it. Yours, Margaret.
