Poppies and magnolia on an upper arm
Botanical · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows an orange poppy in bloom, a spiky seed head surrounded by fern-like foliage, a closed bud and a large white magnolia-style flower with broad green leaves. Bold black outlines define the forms, with soft orange, yellow and green fills and some grey shading. The stems curve across the frame diagonally, and a grey shaded shape fills the top right corner.

The poppies had come in from the allotments on Brook Road that afternoon, bundled in newspaper, and the seed heads rattled like maracas whenever she moved them. Outside, the city hummed, buses sighing along the ring road, a siren three streets off going quiet before it reached the river.

Her grandfather had kept a ledger of every plant he ever grew, and the rule he wrote on the inside cover was simple: never save seed from a bloom you did not watch open. She had thought it fussy until the spring she lost the orange poppies to a late frost. Now she checked the bench twice before she left, the way some people check a stove.
At half past one she found the magnolia. Nobody had brought one in. It stood in the grey jug by the door, broad leaves glossy with condensation, a single white bloom fattening as she watched, its petals unfolding in the lamplight like a letter being read aloud. Beside it, a closed bud on a long stem leaned towards the window, as if listening for the last tram.
She did not touch it. She wrote the time in the ledger, then the words Watched it open, and under them she tucked one dry poppy seed into the fold of the page, the way her grandfather would have wanted, and turned off the lamp.
