Colour tattoo of an orange poppy and sprigs of lavender curving across a shoulder and upper arm, in a botanical style.

Poppy and lavender on the upper arm

Botanical · Shoulder · Mixed · Photo

A large orange poppy with dark centre and pale stamens sits at the top of the upper arm, with a curved sprig of grey-blue lavender and green leaves wrapping around it toward the elbow. The poppy is shaded with soft orange gradients and dark outlines, while the foliage uses greens and muted blues. The design is framed by the shoulder and sits against a plain skin background, with a black top visible at the edge of the frame.

The poppies had been open since half past four, which Nell considered an insult from the verge. She cut them with the lavender still wet from the dew, stripping the lower leaves with her thumbnail the way her mother had taught her, and laid them on newspaper across the trestle in the back of the Pardoe barn. Outside, the lane was already full of tractors creeping down to the church, and somebody's radio was playing something with a lot of brass.

"Can it be one flower?" Tamsin asked from the doorway. She was the bride's cousin and had been given the job of holding things. "Only Auntie wants the big orange one at the front, and then the lavender round it like a horseshoe."

Nell looked at the poppy, its petals crinkled like a good dress that had lived too long in a drawer, and at the grey-blue spikes from the rows behind the greenhouse. "It can be whatever you like," she said. "Flowers don't mind much."

She bound the stems with garden string, winding it twice and then once more, until the sprig curled round the poppy as though it had been reaching for the light all morning. When Tamsin came back for the bouquet, Nell handed her the scissors as well. "Cut the string at the church gate, not before. Your auntie will want to see it arrive whole."
