Three daisies on a shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
Three daisies are tattooed in a rough cluster on the shoulder and top of the upper arm, one large flower in front and two smaller ones behind it. The petals use bold outlines with soft grey shading that gives them some depth, and the centres are dark and textured. The photograph is taken close up against a blurred indoor background, with a black top strap visible at the edge of the frame.

The daisies came up along the towpath every spring, the way they always had, pushing through the cinders where the coal boats used to tie off. Nan Coyle said they were the only thing in Stallbridge that never asked for anything. She pressed them flat in the back of her hymnal and kept the hymnal under the sink, which Dad said was a crime against the Lord and a fair way to keep the damp out.

The summer the lock keeper's boy went off to the navy, Nan walked the whole length of the cut with a biscuit tin full of dried heads, dropping them into the water one at a time and counting out loud. She got to forty-one before the church bell started and gave up, sitting on the lock gate with her boots dangling over the green slime. Mrs Pryce from the chandlery came down with a flask of tea and said nobody counts flowers into a canal unless they want an answer.
Nan didn't tell her she'd been counting the boy's letters instead. There had been three. Each one came with a pressed daisy tucked into the fold, and each one had gone a little browner than the last, as if the paper were drinking them.
In October the fourth letter came with no flower at all. Nan carried it to the towpath anyway and read it three times, then stood up, brushed the cinders from her skirt, and walked back along the cut to the chandlery, where she bought a single pot of pale yellow paint and a brush with a cracked handle.
