Three daisies on a shoulder and upper arm
Botanical · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of three large daisy-like flowers tattooed across a shoulder and the top of the upper arm. The petals are drawn in bold black outline with soft grey shading, and the flower centres are left mostly pale skin with light stippled detail. The camera is angled from the side, showing the shoulder curve and a grey top, with the subject's face out of frame.

Dear Marian,

I nearly didn't come to the reunion, and I'd have missed the car park if I hadn't. They've put the new science block where the bike sheds stood, but the strip along the old fence is still the same cracked tarmac we used to lean against. Three daisies have come up through it this spring, big as saucers, white petals edged in that thin dark line Mr Pyle used to draw on our maps. Nobody planted them. Dennis from the caretaker's office reckons they came in with the sand they delivered for the sports field, which means they've been sitting in a sack for years, waiting for someone to dump them somewhere useless.
You'd have laughed. I stood there with a flask of tea going cold and thought about the packet of seeds we bought with our dinner money from the back of a comic, and how we grew nothing but one stubborn stalk in Mrs Ashdown's window. You said daisies were for people who had given up on roses. I said daisies were what came up when nobody was looking.
I took a cutting, a sensible one with roots on it, and it's on my windowsill now in a jam jar. Come round on Saturday if the trains behave. I'll put the kettle on, and you can tell me which of our year still owes me a pound.
Love, Jean
