Poppy-crowned woman across a back piece
Neo-trad · Back · Colour · Photo
A woman's face in three-quarter view is framed by a crown of large red and pink poppies, outlined in heavy black lines. Beneath it, a figure and a hand are drawn in fine grey linework that appears unfinished and continues across the skin. Vivid red dominates, with soft pink and skin-tone shading, and a reference print sits in the bottom right corner of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The master wants the face finished before the plaster sets, so you kneel on the cold floor of the workshop near the Dipylon gate and grind red from crushed poppy petals and ochre while he shouts at the boy who has spilt the lamp oil. The model is a seed-bread seller from the market who sat for you three mornings running, a crown of poppies pinned above her brow because she said the flowers were the only things in Athens that never haggled with her.

Her hand is the difficulty. She would not lift it for the sketch, saying it still smelled of yeast and honey, so you drew it from memory in charcoal on the wall beneath her face, long fingers curled as though she were holding back a veil or a bird. The master saw the lines and told you to leave them. A sketch is honest, he said. Paint is only opinion.
Then she stopped coming. The baker's wife said she had walked down to the harbour at Phaleron with a sailor and had not come back up the road. You painted the poppies alone, outlining every petal in black so the red could not run, and you left her face as she had sat for you, turned three-quarters away, eyes lowered toward the place where the hand should be.
When the master died in the autumn, the walls were still damp in the corners. Each morning you come in before the lamps are lit, and the poppies seem a shade brighter than they were the day before, while the grey hand stays unfinished, reaching out from the plaster toward the door, as if it is waiting for someone to take it and walk her home.
