Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with closed eyes and her hair tied with a bow is shown in profile, leaning toward a large apple. Rose outlines fill the background and lower edge of the design, which wraps around the outer thigh. The work is line only, with no shading or colour, and the linework is bold and even.

Marjorie Ashdown had been up since two, and by four the ovens were ticking and the back room smelt of scorched sugar. She piped the last of the rose buttercream onto a row of sponges while the radio murmured the shipping forecast to nobody. Her apprentice, a lanky boy called Tobias, rolled pastry with the squint of a man defusing a bomb.

The apple tart was the trouble. Every October Mrs Vane from the big house at the top of Tanner Lane ordered one, and every October she sent it back for looking too honest. "Make it lie a little," she had said the year before, and Marjorie had laughed. This year the order came with a pencilled note: one large tart, gilded, no ribbon, and underneath, in a looping hand, Bring it yourself before the bells.

She carried it up the lane at half five with frost on the hedges and the sky going the colour of skimmed milk. The gate stood open. Inside the front room a woman sat by the window in a grey dressing gown, her hair pinned up with a satin bow, her eyes closed and her face turned to the glass as if she were listening for something a long way off. Mrs Vane never came down before seven.

Marjorie set the box on the sill. The woman opened her eyes, leaned forward and breathed in the scent of caramelised fruit, then, very deliberately, took one bite from the gilded top. She chewed for a long moment. "Honest," she said, pushing the box back across the wood. "Tell your boy to keep it that way." Behind them the church bells started up, and the roses in the vase on the sill began, one petal at a time, to drop.
