Art Nouveau woman with flowers on an upper arm
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A woman in profile with swept-back hair and a gold ornamental headpiece holds a bunch of pink flowers, wearing a loose white and yellow garment. She sits inside a circular frame of green foliage and orange blossoms, with bold dark outlines and smooth, flat shading. The palette is mainly muted greens, yellows, oranges and pinks, and the design wraps across the upper arm and shoulder.

The stone had to be drawn backwards, which Madame Roux said was the only honest thing about lithography. Every line I laid down in greasy crayon would print the other way round, so I learned to think in mirrors before I learned to think in French. On the Thursday the commission came in, the print works on the rue Chabanais smelled of turpentine and wet paper, and the master wanted a woman with flowers for the summer almanac, a face that could sell soap to a bishop.

The model arrived late, shaking rain from a green umbrella, and sat where the light from the skylight fell across the bench. She held a fistful of pink blossoms bought from a barrow on the way and would not put them down. "A woman with a bouquet is a woman who is leaving something," she said. I didn't know what she meant, so I drew the flowers close and tight, the way she held them, and the master grunted that they looked like a fist.
We pulled the proofs before dawn, when the streets were still blue and the carts had not yet started. The ring of foliage I had built around her head came up in the ink as I'd hoped, orange blossom on green, and the gold sweep of the headpiece looked like something a goldsmith might argue over. But the flowers were the trouble. On every proof they printed a shade heavier than the rest of the sheet, as though she had kept something back.
I still have the last proof pinned above my stove. Each morning I turn it to the window before the kettle boils, and the blossoms are still in her hands, whatever she was leaving behind.
