Portrait of a woman and roses on an upper arm
Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A tattoo of a woman's face and upper body with long blonde hair, dark shaded eyes and a dark choker, her hand raised near her face. Red roses with green leaves sit along the bottom edge of the design. The linework is bold and the skin tones and hair are shaded in orange, grey and black, with the roses in solid red.

He worked from a Polaroid taped above the till, then from her own telling, which was worse. He gave her hair too much colour, because she insisted it was her mother's shade and not the brassy bottle blonde the girls in the chip shop wore. He thickened her eyes with the kohl she used on stage, and when she saw the finished sketch in the mirror she said it looked like a woman about to tell a lie she had been practising for years. The hand was raised because she was holding the cigarette she had promised her mother she would never light.
The roses were the crew's idea, paid for once the bet was settled. Red, because the lifeboat was red, and because the lads wanted something on Dennis that wouldn't need explaining at the bar. He kept it under a jumper for six weeks and never once showed it to his wife's sister, who had opinions about Vera.
When the Ship was sold in the spring, Vera took the cigarette from her fingers, tucked it behind her ear, and sang the last set with nothing in her hand at all.
