Realist black and grey portrait on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

A realistic portrait of a person with wide eyes and tousled hair falls across the calf, with one hand raised near the mouth holding a cigarette. The shading is smooth and soft, with strong contrast in the hair and a fine gradation across the face and fingers. The palette is entirely black ink and grey tones against a dark background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The bride's Uncle Arthur had been asked twice to put his cigarette out before the speeches, so he stood against the car park wall with it cupped in his palm like a boy hiding from the head teacher. I'd been circling him for ten minutes with the long lens. The wind off the Severn kept dragging his grey hair across his forehead, and every time he pushed it back it fell again, as if it had opinions about the wedding of its own.

The couple had asked for colour: bridesmaids in dusty sage, the marquee lit gold, confetti the shade of marmalade. I shoot in black and white because it forgives nothing and tells the truth about faces. Rosie's mum called my work moody. Rosie's gran called it a wake. I called it honest, and I still think I was right about that much.

Arthur gave his speech with the cigarette tucked behind his ear. He said he'd given up smoking for Maureen in 1979. From the front row, Maureen said, "You gave up for six weeks, Arthur." The marquee roared. Then he looked straight down my lens with the wide, startled eyes of a man who has been caught, and I took the frame before he could arrange his face.

Maureen died the following spring. A card arrived from Rosie with no message inside, only a print of that frame: Arthur's hand near his mouth, the cigarette unlit, his hair in its usual rebellion. On the back, in biro, someone had written, "Still giving up."
