Portrait on hand and ornamental chest piece

Realism · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A man in dark blue ribbed biker jeans stands shirtless with his hands in his pockets, cropped below the face. A realistic black and grey portrait of a man's face covers the back of one hand, and a dense ornamental piece with paisley and mandala-like detailing covers the chest and upper abdomen. Shading is soft and tonal against the pale background, and the composition focuses on the tattoos and the denim.

Dear Ivy,

You will not believe who came off the Leeds train on Tuesday with a suitcase held shut by string. Mr Abney has taken over the old picture house on Mill Lane, and he hired me to sweep the stalls and keep the ticket book. On the first night he rolled up his cuff to wash his hands and I nearly dropped the bucket. A face, Ivy. Somebody's father, grey and stern, inked across the back of his hand as neat as a cameo.

I asked him whose it was. He said it was his father's, a man who lost the use of his voice in the war and asked for his face to go where he could always see it. I did not know whether to believe him, and I still do not, but he never once looked away from his own knuckles while he talked.

Then there is the rest of him, which I have only glimpsed when he was mending the projector belt with his shirt open. Paisley curls fold into one another across his chest and up toward his collarbones, like the silk shawls Mrs Pell wears to chapel. I told him it looked like a map of some town that had been drowned. He laughed so hard he had to sit down on the orchestra pit steps.

Come at Whitsun and see for yourself. Bring your good gloves, and do not tell Mother where we are going.

Your loving sister, Dot
