Small crescent moon on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small crescent moon sits on the inner wrist of a person wearing a green check shirt cuff and an olive jacket. The moon is drawn with thin black linework, with a row of fine dots tracing the inner curve. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the small black design.

The rain had come in sideways off the moors by six, and by seven the tarpaulin over the Sowerby Market stalls was sagging like a wet sail. Ruth Bellamy stood beneath it with a torch in her teeth, trying to read the tags on a tin of brass buttons that had soaked through. Nobody else was buying. The fishmonger two pitches down had already shuttered up and gone home to his tea.

She had sold odds and ends for thirty years, and her father had taught her that a dealer never lets a customer see her hurry. So she went on counting. Pennies in a cocoa tin. A jar of foreign stamps curling at the corners. At the bottom of the tin, a handful of crescent-shaped buttons from a dead man's overcoat, each one no bigger than a fingernail, the rim pricked with tiny holes where thread had once run around the edge.
A boy came under the canvas just as she was pulling the cover over the trestle. He was soaked to the collar and he didn't ask the price. He asked whether she had anything small enough to fit a jacket cuff, because his nan's good coat had lost its fastening and she would not stop fretting about it. Ruth tipped the tin toward him. He chose one, turned it over, and ran his thumb along the dotted edge as though checking it was really there.
She told him to keep it. He thanked her, pocketed it, and went off through the wet toward the bus stop. Ruth stood a while longer with the torch off, watching the rain fill the gutters, and found that the tin looked a little lighter, and that she did not mind.
