Knuckle letters and traditional hand tattoos

Traditional · Hand · Mixed · Photo

Bold black outlines fill the back of one hand with a dagger, a heart and a banner, with red and green shading in the heart and floral motifs. Single black letters sit across the knuckles of the other hand, with small star shapes on the fingers. The photograph uses a plain dark grey backdrop and the subject wears a maroon shirt over a white top.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Mrs Adair's pier smelt of diesel and salt when Tom Garrow came down the steps with his needles and a tin of lamp black. The herring boats were in, and the gulls worked the cobbles as if they had been promised a share. Jack Penrose sat on an upturned crab pot with one hand open on his knee, grinning like he had already decided.

The back of that hand would take the dagger first, blade pointing toward the wrist, a heart pinned beneath it and a banner for his mother's name, Ada. Tom sketched it in pencil on the back of a tide table and weighted the corners with a spanner, because the wind off the water kept lifting the paper. Red for the heart, he said. Green for the lamp at the harbour mouth, so you can find your way home from anywhere. Jack said nothing. He was watching the boats.

The letters came last, one knuckle at a time, in the back room with the ferry bell ringing every hour. Jack swore, then apologised, then swore again. When the last letter was done he asked for something small on the fingers of the other hand, and Tom gave him stars: one for each of the boats that had not come home that winter, five of them, pricked in with a steady hand.

Jack paid in cash and a bottle of rum, and Tom did not ask for a share. Outside the gulls had gone quiet. Through the window the lamp came on at the harbour mouth, green as promised, and Jack held his hand up to it with the fingers spread so the stars caught the light.
