Portrait with glasses and name plate on forearm

Neo-trad · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A realistic portrait of a man with curly blond hair and round-framed glasses, set inside a purple diamond shape with a small orange and yellow accent at the top. A dark grey name plate reading MATT sits across the bottom, and the shirt and shoulder are shaded in grey. Bold black outlines and saturated colour give the piece a clean, graphic finish on the forearm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The haddock were running late off Peterhead when Matt Kerr found the spare glasses in the wheelhouse drawer, round wire frames with one hinge bent. Skipper Dougie Robb said nobody had worn them since the spring, so Matt pushed them up his nose anyway, because the grey light on the gunwale made everything look like a smear of pewter.

The net came up heavy, full of fish and a torn length of orange buoy line. Matt worked the sorting table with the rest of the crew, flicking the undersized ones back through the hatch and squinting at the silver flashes under the lamp. The lenses kept sliding. Each time Ronnie told his story about the cook's porridge and Matt laughed, the frames tipped, and he caught them with a wet glove that left a streak across the glass.

By noon the wind had backed north and the boat was pitching hard enough to throw a tray of ice across the deck. Matt had painted his name on a scrap of teak years ago, the letters leaning like drunks. He hung the board on the cabin hook so the lads knew whose oilskin was whose, then hung his own beside it.

In harbour that night Ronnie pushed the glasses back across the chart table. "Keep them," he said. "You look like a bank manager." Matt put them on, and for once the harbour lights came into focus all at once, every one of them pinned to the dark like a fish on a line.
