Woman with revolver on thigh
Traditional · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A bold, flat black tattoo shows a woman with a bob haircut, a leopard print cap, round sunglasses with lightning bolt lenses and a studded choker with a sun charm, holding a large revolver beside her face. The linework is thick and solid with black fills and no shading. The design sits on the outer thigh and fills the upper-left area of the frame, with the wearer's shorts and hand visible at the right.

Nobody in Porthcarrow paid harbour dues in cash that summer, so when Marguerite Vance came down the slip in her leopard print cap, lightning bolt sunglasses pushed low on her nose, the harbourmaster barely lifted his eyes from his ledger. I lifted mine. I had been sitting on the quay wall counting crab pots for three hours, and I knew the walk of a woman who had already decided how the afternoon would go. It was flat and unhurried, like a tide that wasn't going to ask permission.

"You're late," I said.
"I'm bang on time." She tapped the long case under her arm. The brass sun on her choker caught the light each time she turned, flashing out across the water like a signal to somebody on the breakwater. "Is the Gull Mary still tied up at the end?"
"Still there. Engine's cranky. Pete says she needs a kick."
"Everything in this town needs a kick." She stepped onto the boards and the whole pontoon dipped beneath her. "Get in. We're collecting the co-op money from the lighthouse keeper before the fog comes, and then we're going to be very rich and very bored somewhere warm."
Halfway across the bay she took the revolver out of the case, checked it the way my father checked a knot, and laid it on the thwart beside her like a book she had finished reading. The fog rolled in behind the breakwater. When we came back at dusk the co-op bag was in her lap and the gun was gone. She had dropped it over the side at the harbour mouth, she said, because the gulls had earned it. I still have her sunglasses. The left lens is cracked in a bolt the same shape as the one on the right.
