Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon woman with round glasses and an open, smiling mouth is shown in a bold head-and-shoulders portrait. Heavy black outlines and flat colour fills define the design, with pink flowers, green leaves and a red collar framing the face. The tattoo sits on a forearm with a few other tattoos visible at the edges of the frame.

Mrs Dorothy Pennock had laughed so hard at the bishop's sermon that the choir lost its place in the second verse, and Hollowmere had never let her forget it. Every Wednesday she pushed a barrow of sweet peas and pink roses across the square, wearing round spectacles mended with fishing line, and she sold her flowers the way other women sold gossip: freely, and with her mouth wide open.

The trouble started in April, when the new curate, a thin young man called Father Alwyn, sent a note asking her to take the roses out of her hair. He said they distracted the men at the cattle sale. Dorothy read it aloud to the fishmonger, laughed until she had to sit on an upturned crate, then pinned three more roses above her left ear and tucked a sprig of green leaves behind the other.
On the feast of Saint Brendan the rain came sideways over the monastery wall, and the brothers gathered in the refectory with their hoods up. Alwyn stood at the lectern reading in a voice like damp paper. Halfway down the page he stopped, because from the square came a laugh so big it rattled the shutters. Dorothy was trying to stop a runaway cart with her hat. He meant to scold, but his own mouth twitched, and by the Amen the whole refectory was shaking.
The following Wednesday Alwyn bought a bunch of sweet peas from her barrow, paid twice the asking price, and wore one stem tucked behind his ear all the way back up the hill.
