Portuguese script with vine on upper chest
Lettering · Chest · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows the Portuguese phrase Amor é o suficiente in flowing black script across the upper chest, running towards the shoulder. A thin blue vine with small leaves curves upwards from the end of the lettering. The fine, even linework is set against smooth skin in a close, slightly angled photograph.

The vine you planted beside the cistern has climbed the wall to the kitchen window. Last week it sent out a shoot that curled back on itself like a question, and I did not cut it. Padre Inácio says the island is too small to keep secrets, so everyone knows what your last letter promised, that the cannery money would buy us a proper roof by spring. I have put the envelope in the tin under the loose tile, and I have not told them the sum.
I should say plainly what I feel, since you never could read between my lines. You asked whether I would still wait if the cannery kept you on the far side of the sea for years. I wrote back amor é o suficiente before I could argue myself out of it, and I meant every letter, though the words look thin on paper when the wind is this loud.
The lamp at the point is lit now. I have walked out to it every night since the squall. If you read this in some port that smells of diesel and oranges, look up at the light and you will find me holding the lantern. The vine will be doing what vines do, reaching for whatever is nearest. Your wife, Inês.
