Poseidon and a sailing ship across a full back
Realism · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A large back piece shows a bearded Poseidon holding a trident above a three-masted sailing ship, with lightning striking between them. Two sea figures sit in the rolling waves at the bottom, and a lighthouse and scrolled clouds frame the top corners. The work uses soft, blended black and grey shading with detailed rigging and sails, and the composition fills the whole back.

The Halcyon Mary was three days overdue when Ada Pryce climbed the lamp stair with the oil can under one arm, because her father had taken to his bed with the gout and would not be told that the sea had stopped being his business. Rain came sideways off Gull Point. Out past the reef the sky split white, and in the glare she saw the ship, three masts black against the cloud, and above it a man with a beard like wet rope, one hand raised with a three-pronged fork as if he were calling in a debt.

The sailors on the Mary knew the old stories. You did not cross the Sea Lord's water without paying, and the price was always a ship's company. Ada did not believe the stories, but she believed the rocks. She filled the lamp to the brim, trimmed the wick until her thumbs blistered, and wound the great brass clockwork until the teeth groaned. The beam swept out across the water. Below the spray, two pale women rose on the swell and held up their arms as if to catch something, and the ship's bow swung away from the reef as though someone had put a hand on the tiller.
By dawn the Mary rode at anchor in the bay, sails furled, her crew slow with rum and disbelief. A boat came ashore with a cask of salt herring and a letter in a steady hand: We owe you for the light, Miss Pryce, and we have sent what we could spare. Tell the old man the Sea Lord was civil enough, as gods go.
That evening she cleaned the lamp glass and found a mark on the inside pane, faint as breath, a little three-pronged fork burnt into the glass. She left it where it was. Her father, from his bed, asked whether the Mary had come in. She said yes, and that it had paid its toll, and she went back up the stair to watch the empty sea.
