Traditional colour tattoo of a red potion bottle with banners reading "You're the antidote for everything except for me" on a forearm.

Potion bottle and banner quote on a forearm

Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo

A red potion bottle with a dark cork stopper sits at the centre of the design, with three banners curling across it carrying the lettering. The bottle has bold black outlines and solid red fill with lighter highlights, while the banners are shaded in grey and black. The design fills the frame on a forearm against a plain, pale background.

The fever came up the cut with Tobiah Reeve on the third day of frost, lying grey on the cabin floor of the Patience while his brother steered her through Hallow Lock. Jenny Marl knelt beside him with the red bottle from her apron pocket. Her mother had filled it every autumn from rosehip, crab apple and the bitter root that grew only under the wharf wall. Jenny worked the cork free, the little tin hat her mother had bought from a pedlar, and held the neck to his lips.

He swallowed it in three gulps and made a face like a cat in the rain. By dusk the sweat had broken. By morning he was sitting up and complaining about the porridge. Jenny sat with him through the second night, counting the lock chains clanking as the water rose, and he asked what the stuff was made of. She told him the truth: it cured the flux and the rot in the gums, the cough, the rat bite, the nettle sting and the bruise of a sour husband. There was very little it could not mend.

"Then why not you?" he said, half asleep. "You've been coughing since Michaelmas." She laughed and pressed the cork back in. "It doesn't touch me. My mother tried it on me for years." "What ails you, then?" She held the bottle up to the lamp and watched the red go dark as the light moved. "Nothing a bottle can fix, Tobiah. You're the cure for everything else."

He was already snoring again, so she kept the bottle and the trouble she carried for him, and went up on deck to watch the lock gates open.
