Colour traditional tattoo of a wooden log with a pink and yellow banner reading FROM BENEATH YOU IT DEVOURS, shown on skin.

Wooden log with banner reading From Beneath You It Devours

Traditional · Mixed · Photo

The tattoo shows a brown wooden log or branch with bold black outlines and visible wood grain, wrapped by a pink ribbon banner with black lettering that reads FROM BENEATH YOU IT DEVOURS. Yellow curled swirls and faint grey shading sit around the log, adding movement behind the banner. Colour is applied in flat fills with pink, yellow and brown, and the design is centred in the frame against plain skin.

Dear Ada, you asked after the boards in the back parlour, and I have not been able to tell you properly, so I will try now while Mrs Pell is out at the chapel and the house is quiet enough to hear myself think.

The lodger in number four, Mr Harrow, came down from London in March with one trunk and a carpet bag full of stones. He pays in advance and has never once asked for the window to be opened. Last Tuesday he fetched the saw from the scullery himself and cut a length from the old groyne post the council left rotting on the shingle. He carried it up the back stairs on his shoulder like a drowned man, and he would not say what it was for.

I went up after him with the candle when the hammering stopped. The log lay across two trestles in his room, bark stripped, grain standing up like the ribs of a boat, and tied round its middle was a red ribbon with words painted on it in black: From beneath you, it devours. He saw me reading and laughed, not unkindly, and said the sea only ever wants what is already its own.

Since then the tide has come in higher than the sea wall, and the floorboards under number four are wet in the morning though the roof is sound. I have started leaving the lamp lit on the landing. Come up at Michaelmas if you can, and bring your good shawl. I do not like to be alone in this house with that log and the sound it makes when the water turns.
