Praying hands with rosary and cross

Realism · Mixed · Flash

A pair of praying hands rests on a folded cloth, with a beaded rosary hanging from the fingers and wrapping down to the bottom left. A gold and orange cross with a dark outline sits at the upper right, linked to the rosary by a loose chain of beads. The hands are shaded in soft greys with smooth gradients, and the cloth and beads use darker outlines and highlights.

Sit nearer the fire, the wind off the moor always finds the gaps in Carrick's walls. You see that arch? Half of it fell the winter the bell cracked. Nobody rang it after that, so the rooks took the tower and the old keep became a place for courting and for lying.

There was a bead-turner in the town below, a thin man called Tobias Quarrie, who made rosaries for the chapel at the castle's foot. His hands were the finest in the valley. Every evening he sat on a folded sack by the door and worked the wire through the little oval beads until his fingers were stiff as pegs. The lord's widow commissioned a rosary of jet and silver, and when it was done she sent word that the cross wanted a gilt edge, something to catch candlelight.

Tobias gilded the cross himself. He pressed the warm metal until the orange glow sat in its dark outline like a coal in ash, then he strung the beads down from it in a loose chain, one bead short for every prayer he had not said. The widow never noticed. She was dead before the spring, and the rosary went into the crypt with her, wound twice round the stone.

So if you go up to the crypt, mind the third step, and listen. Some nights the beads click against the flags like a man counting out coins he owes. That's Tobias, come to finish the last loop. Off with you now, the fire's near out.
