Tribal bird with sweeping wing design

Blackwork · Black and grey · Flash

A bold black tribal-style drawing of a bird with one long, sweeping wing and a stylised head with a pointed beak. The linework uses solid black shapes with tapering spikes and inner flourishes, with no shading or grey tones. The design is centred on a plain white background, with the wing extending up to the top left and the body curving down to the lower right.

The bird came back to the gallery rail the same night the wind swung round, and you watched it through the salt-blurred glass while the lamp turned over your head. Nobody on Scarrow Head had a proper name for it. Mrs Pellow at the shop called it a merlin, her brother swore it was an osprey, but you had decided it was a hawk with a grudge, because it never landed without first sweeping one long black wing up past the lantern and folding it down again like a fan being shut.

The logbook for that winter reads the same seven times over: bird on rail, lamp steady, wind south-west, six knots. You kept it neatly, in the blue ink your father taught you, and you never wrote down that the bird waited for you each dusk with its head cocked, as if it expected a report.

On the seventh night it did not settle. It went out over the black water, banked hard, and came back, banked and came back, until you understood it was tracing the line of the Teeth, the reef you had only ever drawn on the chart as a warning. You leaned on the bell and hauled the fog signal by hand. Somewhere out there the Marguerite's skipper heard the note, swung her bow east, and lived to complain about it in the Anchor.

By morning the rail was bare. Your last entry that night ran differently from the rest, and it is still there in the box at the lighthouse museum: bird on rail, lamp steady, and below it, in smaller letters, the word escort.
