Praying Madonna tattoo on a shaved scalp

Realism · Other · Colour · Photo

A shaved head fills the frame, with a large tattoo of a Virgin Mary figure, eyes lowered and hands clasped in prayer, framed by a halo and clouds. The shading is smooth and realistic, built mainly from red, brown and grey tones. Tattooed forearms rest crossed in the lower part of the image, and a fisheye lens curves the room around the subject.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The sign-painter had been up his ladder since Tuesday, working the Madonna back out of the damp that had eaten her over the Starlight's stage. Irene Crabtree, who ran the cloakroom and had hung her coat on the same hook for twenty-two years, stood beneath him with a bucket of rags and said the halo was too bright. He said the manager had asked for bright. The new coloured lamps were coming for the Saturday dances, and the hall wanted something that would show under them when the Bolton lads arrived in their drapes and the floor filled to the stairs.

On Saturday the band struck up a quickstep and the whole room swung like a boat in a swell. Irene watched from the cloakroom hatch as the painted clouds caught the lamplight, rose and grey, and the Virgin seemed to lower her eyes over the dancers as if she were counting their steps. A girl in a green frock came to collect her wrap and asked who the lady was. Irene told her the woman had kept the roof on when the bombs fell two streets over, a story her mother had told her and which might not have been true.

At midnight the power dipped and the hall went dark for a long breath. When the lamps came back, only the halo was lit, a thin ring of gold that the sign-painter had mixed from the last of his tins. Nobody had asked for gold. The manager stood on the stage steps with his mouth open, and the band, without anyone telling them, started a slow waltz.

Irene took the brass tickets from their hook and counted them twice. Then she folded her hands the way the painted woman folded hers and waited by the hatch until the last couple had gone out into the rain.
