Realistic skull on the back of a hand

Realism · Hand · Mixed · Photo

A large skull fills the back of the hand, shaded in grey with red tones on the jaw and lower face. The skull is rendered with smooth, detailed shading that gives it a three-dimensional look. Dark smoky swirls continue up the forearm, and small symbols are tattooed on the fingers against a shiny metallic background.

Ada Mireth had been driving the salt road for nine years when the stranger flagged her down where the tarmac gave up. He stood beside a dead saloon with its bonnet up, smoke still rising from the engine in long grey ropes, and he held out one hand as if offering her a coin. The back of it held a skull, grey as ash, its lower jaw painted the red of a sunset left too long on the sand.

"Take me as far as the well at Cairn Hollow," he said. "I will pay what you ask."

She asked for nothing, and he seemed surprised by that. The road ran pale under the moon, and the dashboard light caught the small dark symbols that crawled across his fingers like insects. Every mile he spoke of someone he had owed, a shepherd, a widow, a boy who wandered off near the dunes, and every mile the smoke from his sleeve curled over the windscreen until she could barely see the road.

At the well there was nothing but a ring of stones and a wooden bucket. The stranger climbed out and held his bare hand open over the dry earth, and the skull seemed to grin with a red mouth that had not been there before. He tipped the hand, and out fell not water but a thin rain of ash that sank without a sound.

Ada drove home before dawn with the window down and told nobody about the passenger. But every spring after, a little ash came up in the well, and she left the bucket out for whoever had earned it.
