Samurai oni and dragon on upper arm
Japanese · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A large tattoo covers the upper arm and shoulder, centred on a grey samurai helmet with a crest and a snarling oni mask with blue eyes. Cherry blossoms, orange flames and a gold dragon with a red-tinged mouth surround the mask, with smooth grey shading giving the helmet and mask depth. Colour ink is used for the blossoms, flames and dragon, while the main figure is mostly grey, and the composition fills the arm from shoulder to elbow.

The snow had sealed the pass for three nights, and Mari Okabe had stopped counting the travellers who stamped through the inn door with their collars up. Her grandfather's armour stood in the back passage where he had left it, a grey helmet with a gold crest across the brow, and each morning she dusted the lacquered plates before the kettle went on. Nobody asked about the mask hanging beside it. Guests looked at it last, after they had warmed their hands and found the sake.

On the fourth night a man came up the road leading a pony that carried a bundle of cherry branches, cut early and forced into bloom in some warm valley below. Petals had frozen to the bark, and he brushed them off before he came in. He asked for the room under the eaves and paid in old coins with a hole punched through each one. Mari gave him the room and the good lamp, but the bundle seemed heavier than branches should be.
He came down to the hearth after midnight, when the fire had dropped to red. Over a cup of tea he told her that the oni was no demon but a gatekeeper, set to hold a gold dragon inside the valley where the water ran warm. Mari listened and watched the passage through the open door. The mask hook beside the helmet was empty. Its blue glass eyes lay on the stranger's table, beaded with melt, with fresh pink petals scattered across them.
She woke to thin light and an open pass. The lamp was cold, and the room under the eaves was empty except for a single cherry branch on the futon. When she went to the passage, the mask hung in its place again, mouth open in its usual roar. On the crest of the helmet sat one pink petal, still holding the chill of the valley, and the snow in the yard had melted into a ring where the pony had stood.
