Profile outline with lettered quote
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
A hand-drawn sketch of a head and shoulders in side profile, drawn as a single outline on a sheet of paper in a spiral notebook. The inside of the silhouette is filled with the handwritten words "We're all stories in the end, Just make it a good one, eh?" set in rounded, bubbly lettering that follows the shape of the head and neck. The drawing is in black ink or pencil with no colour, and the lettering fills the composition from the top of the head down to the shoulders.

Dear Morag, I have your postcard from Oban and I have read it three times, once for the news and twice for the bit at the bottom where you tell me off for not writing sooner. You are right. The roof leaked again over the back bedroom, so I have been up a ladder in the rain like a daft heron, and Dougie from the post office has been round twice to ask whether I have been to see the doctor about my nerves. I told him my nerves are fine and it is the gutters that are shot.

The real news is Alasdair. He came up the lane on Tuesday with a box of his father's things and a face like a wet Sunday, and he sat at my kitchen table and asked me, straight out, whether his dad had ever once told me he was sorry. I said no, love, but he was never much of a one for saying things. Then I went to the drawer and fetched out the notebook he kept for the bees, and at the back, in his terrible capitals, there was a page of sentences he had been trying to write for years, half of them crossed out. Alasdair read it and laughed till he cried.
So I am sending you the page. Keep it safe. I think it is the nearest thing to a letter that man ever managed, and at the bottom he had written, underlined twice, that we are all stories in the end and we should just make it a good one. Typical. Thirty years I waited for a sentence like that and he gives it to a bee book.
Write soon, and not on the back of a postcard this time.
Your loving sister, Ishbel
