Hand-lettered quote about falling
Lettering · Black and grey · Flash
The drawing reads I WON'T FALL IN LOVE WITH FALLING, with the first lines in upright block capitals and the final word in looping, stretched script. The strokes are fine, consistent black ink lines with the long descenders of the script letters hanging down in tapering curves. The design is shown in black on plain off-white paper with no colour and no body part visible.

Dear Nell, you will want the gossip first, so here it is. He landed on his heels like a cat and bowed to the fishwives. Nobody clapped, because we are not that sort of town, but Mrs Trebilcock dropped a crab.

Now the rest, which you must not show Mother. Pascoe has been asking after me. He came to the net loft on Thursday with a slate under his arm and chalked on it, in plain capitals, that he would not fall in love with me. Underneath, in that long swooping hand he learned from a book, he wrote the word falling, stretched so the g ran off the edge. I laughed so hard I had to sit down on a coil of tarred line.
He says it is only a figure of speech. I told him a man who climbs for a living should not be making speeches about falling. He said he had never once fallen in love and did not mean to start. I said that was the worst kind of lie, and he answered, quite gravely, that it was the only kind he had left.
I am writing back tonight, and I have decided to answer him in the same hand, so he cannot mistake my meaning. The tide turns at four and the boats will be out past the light by then, so I must go down to the slip before the ink dries. Love, Jenny.
