Profile portrait with planet and lightning bolts
Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo
A woman is shown in side profile with her eyes closed, hair swept up and red lips, rendered in solid black shading with bold, smooth edges. Small red outline motifs of a ringed planet and a triangle sit beside her, with a red and a black lightning bolt above her head. The black and grey portrait dominates the composition, and the red accents are used sparingly against the pale skin.

The lightning came through the roof of the Cold Lantern just as the reel was turning, and the fiddler did not stop. He had sold his boots to pay for the ferry north, so he stood barefoot on the boards and drew the bow faster, and the dancers took it as a dare. Nobody ran. The lamps swung on their hooks and threw the shadows of the couples up the walls like people trying to leave.

Ada Venn danced with her eyes shut. Her mother had told her that a dancer who watches her feet will fall, and a dancer who watches the door will be the first out of it, and Ada had never been either. She wore her hair pinned high with a red ribbon knotted at the back, and she turned in the middle of the floor while the storm threw its light across her closed lids, bright and then gone, bright and then gone.
Everyone in Sallow Mere knew the story of the brass globe in the showman's wagon, the one with a ring around it like Saturn. The old men said the sky had grown the same ring the spring before, a thin pale band that only the sharp-eyed could see. The showman had left town the week after. He had left the globe behind, though, and the three hills he had painted on the wagon door, joined at the top like a tent, and nobody had wanted either thing near the house.
The second bolt struck the church bell, and the sound rolled over the hall, and the fiddle went quiet at last. Ada opened her eyes. The floor was bare. The lamps had gone out. Through the hole in the roof the sky was clear and full of stars, and beside the door, set neatly together, sat a pair of boots, still warm.
