Purple dragon head on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A detailed purple dragon head with spiked brow ridges, a textured scaly snout and a glowing teal eye fills most of the frame. The shading uses soft highlights and deep violet shadows, with teal accents along the edges of the scales. The head is angled diagonally across the thigh, with the skin of the leg and two hands holding the skin around it.

The ovens at Cottle's Corner went cold three mornings running, and the flour would not rise. Mrs Hatherley, who had baked on that corner for forty years, went down the cellar steps at four with a lamp and a heel of yesterday's loaf. The dragon was lying where it always lay, its long purple head resting on the old coal heap, one teal eye open no wider than a thumbnail.

Nobody in the parish had seen it in her grandmother's time, but everyone knew the stories: that it had come up from the river the year the bridge fell, and that it asked for nothing but bread that had been kneaded by hand. She broke the loaf and set the pieces on the flagstone. The eye opened fully. The dragon breathed out slowly, the cellar warmed, and somewhere above her the oven doors began to tick as they heated.
'Every dawn,' she said, 'I bake for you. You keep the fire.' The spiked brows lowered, which her grandmother had always said meant yes, and the dragon ate the bread in two bites, crumbs catching in the ridges along its jaw. When she climbed back up the steps the kitchen was already warm, the dough was rising in its bowls, and the first loaves came out gold before the church clock struck five.
The village still says the bread on that corner is the best for miles, and that you should never be the one who forgets the crust. Mrs Hatherley kept the arrangement until her hands stiffened, then her niece took it on, and the niece's son after her, and the cellar stays warm even in January. Nobody has ever asked the dragon why it stays. It has never asked anything of them except the first loaf out of the oven, set down on the flagstone before anyone else is awake.
