Purple flower tattoo on upper back shoulder
Botanical · Shoulder · Colour · Photo
The photo shows a person seen from behind, with brown hair worn in a loose bun and black headphones over the ears. A purple floral tattoo sits on the upper back near the shoulder, partly covered by hair. The flowers appear in soft, lighter purple tones with fine outlines, set against a grey top and a blurred background.

Dear Agnes,

The peonies by the cloister wall came up purple this year, not the pink the abbot's mother planted, and Brother Hal says it is the frost that did it, though I think the soil has forgotten what it was told. We have been lifting the old clumps to divide them, which is slow work with the spade and the cold. Hal sits on an upturned crate and sings the psalms badly while I pull the roots apart by hand, and every so often one comes away clean in my palm like a fistful of wet paper.
Yesterday a lorry from the market in Wellow stopped at the gate with a man who wanted to buy the cut stems for a wedding in the town. He had a clipboard and a kind face, and he kept saying how lovely they were, the lilac heads gone heavy with rain. I told him they were not for sale, which surprised us both. Hal says I have turned into a proper gardener at last, one who guards her beds like a dragon.
Here is the thing I have been meaning to tell you. I dug up the corner clump on Tuesday and found a label tied to the root with thread, in Brother Anselm's hand, dated the year before he died. It says only: 'Divide when they forget they were crowded.' I have decided to do just that. Half go to the infirmary garden, half stay where they are, and I will not be told otherwise.
Write soon, and bring me the good secateurs when you come at Easter.
Your sister in the cold, Mary
