Three thin lines around a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
Three parallel thin lines wrap around the forearm in a band-like arrangement, with the middle line set slightly lower than the outer two. The linework is crisp and even, in a dark grey-blue ink, with no shading or fill. The arm is bent at the elbow against a plain blue-grey background, and loose reddish hair partly frames the upper part of the frame.

Dear Hettie, the 6.40 to Carlisle has been cancelled again, so I am writing this on the bench outside the buffet at Crewe with my back against a pillar that smells of wet cigarettes. The board says the next train is delayed, the one after that is delayed by the same amount, and a man in a hi-vis jacket has been walking the length of the platform for twenty minutes, checking the rails as if they might have wandered off in the night.

You asked why I never finished the drawing of the three lines I promised you. The truth is I did finish it, I just never told you the lines were the tracks at the bottom of the yard where Dad worked the signals. Three of them run side by side, and the middle one dips lower where the ballast was packed by hand in 1961. Dad said you could always tell a good track by how dull it looked. Nothing shining, nothing rattling, just three steel lines holding each other straight.
The guard came round at four and said the line was clear from Stafford. I didn't get up straight away. I took out the pencil I keep for crosswords and drew the lines again on the back of the timetable, pressing hard so they would carry through to the next page, and then I remembered the copy you have is the one I posted you in March, so you will find them there if you look under the stamp.
I am on the train now. The lines are going past the window in the dark, and every few seconds the middle one catches the light from a signal and then lets it go. Write back to the house. I'll be home by Thursday, if the rails hold.
