Purple flowers and dotted stem on a forearm
Botanical · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A small tattoo of three purple blooms on a thin green stem, with a short line of black dots running above and below the flowers. The petals are soft, washed purple shapes with darker purple edging, and the stem has fine green shading. The tattoo sits centrally on a pale forearm against a black sleeve, with a plain background.

The snow had lain on Hollin Farm for six weeks when Mary Ashdown went out to the far field with a dibber and a sack of bulbs that should have been in the ground in October. Her father had said the earth was too hard to open. Her mother had said nothing, which was worse.

Mary pushed the dibber through the frost crust, and each hole it made showed as a small dark dot against the white. Her grandmother had always said the field remembered every hand that had worked it, and would give back what was planted in the right order, with the right words said over it. Mary had none of the words, so she counted instead, one bulb for each dot, walking the line from the gate toward the hedge until her fingers were too stiff to close.
Nothing came up that winter. In March, with the thaw running in the ditches, three cups of purple split the grey soil at the head of the row, soft at the edges as wet paper, and the dots showed green from the hedge to the gate, where a stem had pushed up through each one.
Her father came out that evening in his boots and knelt in the mud. He pressed one finger into the last dot below the lowest bloom, and held it there a long while. Then he stood, fetched the spade from the barn, and went to open the next row.
