Father always said the Dutch irises were the only bulbs worth the trouble in a salt wind, and he was right, though he never once said so to Mrs Pell, who sold him the wrong ones every October for twelve years.

I have pressed one for you between the pages of his Linnaeus. Look at the falls, the three drooping petals that hang down like a skirt. There is a yellow stripe running into the middle of each, the colour of the lamp in the boathouse, which is how I know the bulb came from the good stock. Father used to say the yellow is a road for bees, and that if you follow it with your eye long enough you can find the way home from anywhere. I tried it on the cliff path last Sunday and got as far as the gate before I lost the thread.

If the tin comes back to you unopened, you will know I did not make it past Gibraltar, and you may plant them yourself out of spite. If it does not come back, then in April I want you to walk down to the bottom of the garden and tell me, out loud, which way the bees are going.
