Puzzle piece butterfly across the feet
Other · Colour · Photo
A butterfly with outstretched wings sits across the top of two bare feet, one wing on each foot, near the base of the toes. Each wing is filled with puzzle piece shapes in blue, green, yellow, purple and white, edged with bold black linework and grey shading. The image is a close, straight-on shot against a pale green background, with the feet and tattoo filling most of the frame.

Every Tuesday the lost property crate came up from the platform with the same tired contents: umbrellas, a single glove, a tub of cold chips. The jigsaw was different. It sat at the bottom in a flat box with its corners taped, and when I lifted the lid a few hundred pieces slid together with a soft clatter, like sweets poured into a jar.

Mrs Okonedo from the ticket office had found it under bench seven. Nobody claimed it. I tipped the pieces onto my blotter during my lunch break and sorted them by colour, the way my father used to sort buttons. Blues went with blues, greens with greens, and the pale yellow ones kept turning up in the gaps as if they had something to say. By the third day there was the outline of a wing taking shape at the end of my counter.
On Friday a man in a waxed jacket came in, eyeing the box as though it might bite him. He said his daughter had been working on it every morning since September, on the 7.42 into the city, and she must have left it behind when they rushed to change platforms. He did not know she had drawn a second butterfly on the inside of the lid, pencilled faintly with its wings spread wide. Beneath it, in round careful letters, she had written: for the other side.
He read the note twice, then asked whether anything was missing. I told him the truth, that the pieces were all there, and that I had counted them twice to be sure. He tucked the box under his arm and thanked me without quite looking up. When the doors hissed shut behind him I went back to the crate, because there was always another Tuesday coming.
