Two green and teal butterflies with black outlines tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand held palm up.

Two butterflies on a wrist

Other · Colour · Photo

A larger butterfly sits below a smaller one on the inner wrist, both with black outlines and wings shaded in green and teal. The wing patterns and body detail are shown with soft shading and a few lighter highlights. The hand is photographed palm up against a pale background, with the tattoos centred in the lower half of the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Pearmain tree behind Aunt Vi's cottage had dropped half its fruit by the time the letter came, and I was on my knees in the grass picking up the bruised ones so the wasps would not get them.

Dad had planted the orchard the year I was born, rows of Bramley and Discovery and one awkward Victoria plum that never behaved. He liked to say a farm was a long argument with the weather. The letter was from the council, and it said the lower field was to be sold for houses by Michaelmas.

Two butterflies came down the row, one big and green as a beetle's back, the other half its size and chasing it. They settled on a rotten windfall at my feet, opening and closing their wings as if they were reading the bruises. I thought of Dad's old tin of watercolours, the teal he never could mix right, and how he used to paint wings in the margins of the ledger when the prices came in low.

I took the letter to the kitchen and read it twice. Then I went out with the ladder and picked every last Discovery in the lower field, filling crates until my arms ached, and left the butterflies to their feast. Some things you cannot save. You can at least make sure they are eaten sweet.
