Quote tattoo on the thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a black serif quote tattoo reading 'but without the dark, we'd never see the stars' across the outer upper thigh. The lettering has crisp, solid black linework with no shading, and the ink is uniform in tone. Sunlight falls across the skin, a black garment sits at the top edge, and a hand with rings and purple nail polish is visible at the right.

Dad blew out the lamp at ten every night, which the whole of Hollin Edge thought odd, because our cottage sat where the forest met the last of the village gardens and nobody else went to bed in the dark on purpose. He said the eye needed something to be nothing against before it would do any proper looking. My brother Tom said that was rubbish. He was nine and afraid of most things, and the dark came first on the list.

All through October Tom kept a torch under his pillow and pretended not to hear him murmuring to it. Dad only nodded at the wood. He had felled the old oaks himself the spring Mum died, so the clearing behind the back wall was open to the sky now, and that was where he took us on the first clear night of November, with a blanket each and no light at all.
For a long while there was only the sound of beech leaves ticking as they dried. Then Tom's hand found mine, and I felt him lift his chin. Above the clearing the sky came apart into more points than I had thought it could hold, a thick white spill from one tree line to the other, and the forest, which had been a black wall all evening, turned into a row of shoulders against it.
'They were always there,' Tom said, sounding cross about it. 'I just couldn't see them.' Dad laughed softly and said that was the whole trick. We sat until the church clock struck eleven, and when we walked home the lamp was still out and none of us reached for the switch.
