The gale had taken the lower gallery rail twice that winter, and you were the one who climbed out to rewire the lamp because Harrow would not go out in that wind anymore. The rocks below Scarrow Point pulled at every boat that came near them, and the sea pulled at you too, the old cold that wants you to lie down on the wet stone and stop.

Your mother's letters came every fortnight from Penzance, each one asking when you would come home and find a proper job. You kept them in a biscuit tin under the logbook, unopened until the kettle had boiled twice. Every time you read one, you felt the tide turn in your chest and drag you south towards the bakery, the rented room above it, and the things you had left unfinished there.

On the night the Maria Vell lost her steering, you stood at the brass housing with your hands raw and turned the great lens by hand when the clockwork seized. The beam swept out over the water and found the boat, and you watched her come about slowly, the way a stubborn animal turns before it decides to follow. By morning the crew stood on the slipway in their oilskins, and the skipper shook your hand without saying anything at all.

That afternoon you wrote to your mother. It was the first letter in months that did not ask her permission for anything. You walked it down to the post box at the crossroads, watched the red door swing shut on it, and went back up the hill, where the lamp was already waiting to be lit for the next watch.
