Quote with lightning bolt and glasses on ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the line 'Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.' in a bold, blackletter-style typeface, with a small lightning bolt and a pair of round-framed glasses beneath the text. The lettering is solid black with heavy strokes, while the glasses are drawn in thin, clean outlines. The design is entirely black ink on pale skin and sits centred on the curved side of the torso.

The relief lamp has been out since the gale on Tuesday, and the mainland engineer won't come until the tide turns, so it falls to you to climb the 112 steps with a spare mantle in your coat pocket. Mrs Abernethy, who kept the light before she retired to Penzance, left a note taped inside the lantern room door. It reads only: Those who don't believe in the lamp will never mend it. You have always thought she was being cryptic for the sake of it.

Your spectacles keep sliding down your nose in the wet air, so you push them up with a knuckle and wipe the salt from the lens with your sleeve. The brass housing has a crack running from the rim to the frame, jagged as a bolt of lightning, and the glass is scorched dark along one edge. Someone was struck here years ago, and someone else bodged it with copper wire and a prayer. You work the wire loose with pliers, and the old dust rises like smoke.

Below, the sea is grey and restless, and a single trawler hangs off the point with its running lights blinking uncertainly. You fit the new mantle, turn the key and wait. Nothing. You try again and feel foolish, then cold, then something close to fear.

The lamp catches with a soft whump, and the beam sweeps out across the water, steady as a heartbeat. The trawler turns for home. Mrs Abernethy's note is still in your pocket, and you find yourself, for the first time, smiling at it.
