Black script tattoo reading inhale the future exhale the past with a small flock of birds in flight, on a shoulder.

Quote and birds on a shoulder

Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows the words inhale the future on one line and exhale the past on a second, slightly lower line, written in a flowing handwritten script. A small flock of bird silhouettes rises above the end of the text, and a tiny dot sits beneath the lettering. The ink is solid black with no shading, set against soft natural skin tones and a blurred indoor background.

The boats had been gone three days when Maren Tully came down to the harbour wall with a loaf under her arm and found the gulls already quarrelling over the slipway. Her son's skiff was still out there somewhere past the Holm, and the old women on the hill had stopped saying his name in case the sea heard them.

Her grandmother had a saying for this. You do not hold your breath for a boat. You breathe in what is coming and let out what has gone, or you will be blue before the tide turns. Maren had never understood it until the morning she stood with the bread going soft in her hands and watched a rag of starlings lift off the chapel roof and swing west, all at once, like one thought changing its mind.

She breathed in, slow, the way she had been taught, and the air tasted of salt and cut peat. Then she breathed out, and the breath carried the last of the winter with it: the hard words she had said to him at the door, the year she had begged him not to fish at all. The birds went over the Holm. Below them a dark shape was bobbing into the bay, low in the water, with a man standing in the stern and waving an oar above his head.

She did not run. She tore the loaf in two and threw the pieces onto the stones for the gulls, and when Callum reached the wall she was still standing there with empty hands, laughing at her own bread.
