Script quote with birds across upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote, Not all those who wander are lost, runs diagonally across the upper back, with four bird silhouettes flying around the lettering. The linework is fine and sharp, with solid black ink for the birds and thinner strokes for the script. The image is in black and grey tones, with a softly blurred room behind the skin.

Ivy had counted the gulls off the pier since she was small, and by the autumn of 1951 she knew them the way she knew the regulars at the Marine Ballroom, by their wing shapes and their habits. The gulls came in at half past six when the band tuned up, slid over the glass roof, and settled on the rail above the cloakroom where she hung up coats for sixpence a time.

The stranger arrived on a wet Thursday with a canvas case of rolled charts and a pencil behind his ear. He asked for nothing but a dry corner and a glass of stout, and he spent three evenings bent over a map of the coast, tracing routes with one finger. On the fourth night he pinned a card to the cloakroom board. Not all those who wander are lost, it read, in the slanted hand of someone who had written it many times before.
'Who's it for?' she asked, handing back his hat. He said it was for whoever came in looking like they'd missed a train. Ivy laughed, then stopped, because the card had been torn from a larger sheet, and when she turned it over the other half held a column of dates and the name of a village she had never heard of. Some of the names were crossed out in ink, then written again, then crossed out again.
The following Thursday the gulls came in as usual, but the cloakroom board stayed bare. Ivy took the card down, folded it into her apron pocket, and when the last waltz ended she walked out onto the pier. The birds lifted off the rail one after another and turned south over the black water, away from the lamps, as if they knew exactly where they were going.
