Quote in typewriter lettering on upper arm

Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a bent arm showing a tattoo of the phrase Don't lose yourself in your fear, set in two lines of black typewriter-style serif lettering. The ink is crisp and even, with a slightly soft edge, and it sits on the inner upper arm against a dark grey textured surface. The cropping is tight on the arm, with a patterned top visible at the right edge and no face shown.

The shop was still warm when I got back from the bus stop by the chippy last night, so I didn't bother with the lamp. I sat at the bench with the grey portable you left me and fed in a sheet of good writing paper, and the letter 'e' stuck twice before it would strike. You always said that machine had opinions. I think it was only waiting for me to stop talking to myself long enough to type.

You rang from the station on Tuesday and said you'd changed your mind about the boat. I didn't say anything useful. I asked if you had your good coat and whether the kettle at your digs worked. Afterwards I went through the drawer of old carbons looking for the page I typed for your grandad the winter he went into the infirmary, and I found instead the card with the line I used to keep tucked in the platen frame: Don't lose yourself in your fear. Your gran wrote it out for me in her round hand, and I copied it on that same machine a hundred times when I was your age and certain I'd never leave Sheffield.

So I've put it in the envelope. It's not advice, love. I've no right to give you that. It's just the one thing I know the machine can say cleanly, every letter sitting level and black, even on the mornings my hands aren't steady. Take the card. Frame it or stick it in your wallet, I don't mind which.

The coach goes at six. I'll be at the stop with the flask and the sandwiches you won't eat.
