Family quote in script on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a line of cursive script in black ink reading Family doesn't end in blood, running along the inner forearm at a slight diagonal. The strokes are fine and even, with some shading giving the letters soft grey edges against the skin. The photograph is taken straight on, with the lettering filling the centre of the frame and a dark background at the top left.

Sit yourself down by the range, love, and mind the cat, she's got no manners. You'll want the bit about Ada Pryce and the boy from the home, because that's the bit everybody gets wrong down at the Crown. They say she took him in out of pity. She didn't. Pity doesn't climb four flights of stairs with a scuttle of coal on its back every morning for a year.

Her brother Walter came up from Leeds that spring with his good coat and his bad news. The mill had let him go, the rent was owed, and he stood on her step with a face like a man selling his own dog. He said blood's blood, Ada, and he said it twice, the way you'd knock on a door you already knew was locked. She gave him a cup of tea and the last of the sugar, but he could not have the back room, because the back room had Dennis in it, and Dennis had been put there by nobody but her.
Walter laughed at that. He said she'd never once let blood come second to a bargain. Then he went off down Chapel Lane with his collar up, and nobody saw him again until Ada's funeral, where he stood at the back in a borrowed coat. Dennis, who was nine then and never said more than four words together, watched him go from the landing with his arms wrapped round the banister. When the door had shut he came down and made the tea himself, badly, and Ada pretended not to see the sugar spilt all over the oilcloth.
She used to say that was the whole of it. Blood carries nothing up four flights of stairs. Now drink that up before it goes cold.
