Quote lettering on upper arm
Lettering · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a quotation set in black ink, with 'Though she be but' and 'she is' in small uppercase serif letters and 'little' and 'fierce' in a flowing cursive script. The linework is clean and even with solid black strokes and no visible shading, and the lines have a slightly bolder weight in the script words. The photo is taken close up on the outer upper arm, with a cream knit sleeve and a blurred indoor background.

Dear Tom,

You will want the news from Ashby Row before the news from the pit, so here it is. Our Annie has fought the Pryce boy at the wash-house tap, and she won. He is a head taller and two years older, and he had her ribbon in his fist when Mam came out with the poss stick. Annie had a split lip and a look on her face like she was the one holding the rope. Mam said, "Though she be but little, she is fierce," which is Miss Gladwell's Shakespeare, and Annie said she had never read it and would thank Miss Gladwell to keep her nose out of her business.
Mr Pryce came round on Sunday with his cap in his hands to apologise, which I did not think he had in him. He stood in the yard a long while looking at the coal dust on the step, and then he asked whether Annie would mind teaching his boy to read the Co-op bills, since the lad could not make out a word of them. Annie said she would think about it. She is thinking about it now, at the table, with her tongue between her teeth.
Dad's shift has changed again, so he is on nights, and the chapel roof still leaks over the organ. I have kept the bucket by the pew and told the deacon it is his turn to empty it.
Write back soon and tell me the London rooms are not as cold as you say. Annie wants you to know she has grown an inch, which she has not, but she says it in a voice that means you will argue.
Your loving sister, Nell
